Can you return a pillow? Terms by maker, checked

Editorial ·

Illustration of a pillow leaning against an open shipping carton, with a blank label and a date stamp

Yes, most makers take a pillow back, but on 2026-11-06 Tempur-Pedic states that pillows may not be returned, and the window, the fee and who pays to ship it vary by maker.

Terms and prices read through The ledger as a CSV How we check

The call

If you want a pillow you can send back at no cost, pick Saatva: 45 nights, free return shipping and no restocking fee, at $165. If you want the most time and a lower price, pick Quince: 365 days with a prepaid label, at $124, though its page states no fee either way. Tuft & Needle sits between them with 100 nights and free returns, at $80.

If you would rather not pay to send it back, skip Eli & Elm, which refunds 45 days less shipping costs, and Brooklinen, which states a 365-day window and a $9.95 return fee. Skip Tempur-Pedic if a return matters at all, since it states that pillows may not be returned.

Picks from these rows

Each pick is a rule run on the ledger, and the rules are on how we check. When a term or a price moves, the pick moves with it.

Saatva states a 45-night home trial, a full refund with free return shipping and no restocking fees, so sending this pillow back costs nothing. That is the lowest return cost in the table, and the longest window among the rows that state free return shipping and no fee. It gives the standard loft as roughly 4-5 inches and the high loft as roughly 6-7 inches, at $165.

Best if
You want to try a pillow at home and pay nothing if it fails.
Skip it if
Price matters most, since $165 is well above the cheapest rows.

Quince states that most items can be returned for free for a full refund or exchange within 365 days of delivery, and it sends a prepaid shipping label for the drop-off. That is the longest window among the rows that cost nothing to ship back. Its page states no return fee either way, and the maker lists the pillow as soft, filled with luxe white goose down, at $124.

Best if
You want a full year to decide, and a lower price than Saatva.

What changed

  • 67 rows added to the ledger.

What we compare and why

Four things decide what a return costs you, and we read each from the maker’s own pages on 2026-11-06.

The window is how long you have, in days or nights. Shipping is who pays to send the pillow back. The fee is any charge on top, such as a restocking or return fee. The state is what shape the pillow must be in when it comes back.

We order the table by the cost of sending the pillow back, then the longest stated window, then the lowest price. A row whose pages say too little goes in the second table. The record holds no maker’s rule on the state of the pillow, so that criterion is a gap and not a column.

Window and fee matter most. Quince gives 365 days and Saatva gives 45, yet Saatva is the cheapest to send back, because it states free return shipping and no fee. Brooklinen also gives 365 days, but it states a $9.95 return fee and does not say who pays shipping.

A long window does not make a cheap return.

Marketplace rows are the weak spot. Amazon states that most items can be returned within 30 days of delivery, as it does for the CloudBliss knee pillow, and the record holds no word there on who pays return shipping or on a fee. Those rows sit in the second table. For a side sleeper, the side sleeper list shows the same terms beside height.

What written terms cannot tell you

A maker’s page says what it promises, not how it behaves when a pillow comes back. It will not tell you how fast a refund lands or how a dispute ends. So read the terms as a promise, and keep your order confirmation until the money is back.

The terms leave a few questions open. Brooklinen does not say who pays when a pillow goes back. No maker in the ledger gives a rule for how a used pillow is judged. Boll & Branch states no trial or return window on the pages we read, so its terms are a gap and not a no.

Fees can also sit outside the product page. Luxome states no restocking fee, yet return shipping costs come out of the refund. Read the policy page at checkout, and keep the order date, since makers count the window from different starting points.

No row pays us. How we check says how the terms were read.

How we make money says why no maker influences the order.

Frequently asked questions

Can you return a pillow after you have slept on it?

Yes, with the makers that state a trial, because a trial is built for sleeping on the pillow. Saatva states a 45-night home trial and Tuft & Needle a 100-night sleep trial. Tempur-Pedic states that pillows may not be returned. Makers that state only a return window, such as Casper at 30 days, give no rule here on how worn a pillow may be, so check the condition terms before you sleep on it.

Who pays to ship a pillow back?

It depends on the maker. Saatva, Quince, Tuft & Needle and Casper state that the maker pays, while Eli & Elm refunds less shipping costs and Luxome deducts return shipping from the refund. Brooklinen does not say who pays.

How long do I have to return a pillow?

Among makers that take pillows back, the stated window runs from 30 days to 365 days. Layla and Casper state 30, Saatva 45, Tuft & Needle 100 and Quince and Brooklinen 365. Boll & Branch states no window on the pages we read.

Is there a fee to return a pillow?

Some makers charge one. Brooklinen states a $9.95 return fee, and Saatva and Layla state none. Quince, Tuft & Needle and Casper state free return shipping but say nothing either way about a fee, so ask before you buy.
